My wife Kathy would tell you that I am a good gift giver, especially at Christmas. I do enjoy giving gifts to her, and try to be thoughtful. (HINT: I keep a note on my phone which I update from time to time with ideas…this way when it comes to December, I already know what I plan to get her)
To be fair, now that we’re grandparents, I can hardly go wrong. Anything with a picture of our grandson Arthur or our granddaughter Millie is going to be a win.
But a few years ago, it didn’t work out so well.
I decided that I would get Kathy a puzzle. Now, we’re not “puzzle people”. We’ve never really done them together, and I had no reason to believe she would enjoy it on her own. But I thought it could be something we could do together.
A chance to relax together…maybe enjoy a glass of wine…unwind a bit…you get the picture.
So off I went to the store and found a beautiful 1000 piece puzzle. I mean it was a wonderful winter scene with horses and a carriage and classic old buildings…so romantic! I knew it would be a win. It was practically a Trisha Romance painting in puzzle form.
As she opened the gift, she was a little surprised as it was not a “typical” gift from me. I explained my motivation for it and I think she was slowly convinced that we should give it a shot.
But the truth is, neither of us enjoyed it…I mean at all. You may be a puzzle person and love everything about the process of building one, but our excitement for a new experience faded fast. We found it to be annoyingly slow, next to impossible (I didn’t realize how difficult 500 pieces of snow would be…they all looked the same to me). Even hours into it, we felt like we had made little progress.
As we continued trying to piece the puzzle together, we felt overwhelmed!
And I wonder if you ever feel like that?
Does your life ever feel like a 1000 piece puzzle, too overwhelming to put together?
Hey I get it. Over time, our lives, if we’re not careful can get away from us. To the point where we don’t know where to start or how to make any progress.
We were stuck, and maybe you feel that way too.
That’s why I wrote Vantage Point. It introduces 5 (not 1000) perspectives that when considered together can give you clarity about the life you can live.
We all want to live lives filled with meaning and purpose, but when we are overwhelmed or stuck, it’s hard to know where to begin.
This past Christmas, still determined to find a puzzle Kathy would enjoy, I finally found it.
It’s clean, simple, doable and one she can enjoy with 7-month old Arthur 🙂
So if you want to go from
