It’s Not Too Late to Go After Your Dream…Yet

A couple of weeks ago Kathy and I enjoyed a weekend away at an airbnb. It was a beautiful home in the country that offered a peaceful setting with paths through acres of trees.

Our hosts were a wonderful couple who had purchased this home just 4 years earlier and transformed it from a run down cottage to a gorgeous retreat.

Is It Too Late to Follow Your Dreams?

The morning we were to check out, we ended up sitting with our hosts and got to hear how they moved into the area and also what some of their future plans were. In particular, Joyce, who is very creative had some wonderful ideas and shared her dream to help others through her artistic talents.

Then she admitted that she wondered if it was too late to accomplish what she had in mind.

Now, I don’t know how old Joyce is, of course I didn’t ask…that might have been awkward, but she may be close to “retirement age”. But the more she shared her vision for the future, the more excited she got. And the more excited we got for her.

It was clear to us that she had so much to offer others. We encouraged her to keep pursuing her dreams.

I think most of us can find ourselves where Joyce is. We have something that we want to do…maybe it’s a new idea or something that has been filed away for a long time. We just may not be convinced that our dream is worth the effort.

But I’m convinced that each of us is here to make a difference through our unique personalities, skills set and passions.

Do you have a dream?

  • What specific idea do you think about on a regular basis?
  • How is your idea connected to your abilities and talents?
  • Do others affirm you and encourage you to go after it?
  • Would you regret not accomplishing it?

If so, what’s holding you back from pursuing it?

It’s not too late.

Unless your obituary is about to go public there is still time for you do whatever you were put on this planet to do.

If you’re thinking about doing stuff…it’s not too late

If you’re afraid to fail but still can’t shake it…it’s not too late (In my experience fear is often the indicator that you ought to pursue that very thing)

Basically, if you’re breathing it’s not too late.

Back to School

Tomorrow I’m starting a 13-week course at a local college. It’s related to our small business and includes time with mentors and other resources to help businesses go farther faster.

Some may ask why bother going to school at my age (I’m almost 53). But my response would be “why not?”

Here are a few reasons why I’m looking forward to my first class…

  • It’s relevant to my stage of life and current focus
  • There is always more to learn
  • I can benefit from those who have done what I want to do
  • Learning keeps me active and my brain engaged

But you don’t have to go to school to accomplish what you want to do. There are so many resources available to help you achieve all that you are capable of and want to do.

Blogs, books, podcasts, conferences, seminars, college courses, mentors and more. We have so much at our disposal.

Do Something

At some point you have to stop talking about what you want to do and take action. Just a step. One step.

What would that be for you?

Consider this…

Q. What are you passionate about?

Q. What are you proficient at?

Q. What is it’s potential profit?

If you can bring together these 3 things, then you likely have a viable option to pursue.

Look at it another way…

Passion + Proficiency + Profit = Purpose

But…

Passion + Proficiency – Profit = hobby

Proficiency + profit – passion = boredom

Profitability + passion – proficiency = frustration

Are You Looking to Retire? Or Something Better?

“This notion of tapering off is just crazy. That’s the way you die. Retire and die. Put a car on the block for six months and it’s no good. Put a man up on the block for six months, he’s no good. It’s as simple as that.” Mortimer Adler

The older I get the more this rings true. Hey, I love to play golf…which I haven’t done all year. I love to ride my bike…sadly, I haven’t done that this year either. But life is more than leisure. In fact, I think that leisure can actually be depressing if taken to the extreme.

You are here for way more than that.

You’re still breathing aren’t you? It’s not too late.
