Back in 2014, while still in pastoral ministry, I sensed that it was time to make a change in my career. I wasn’t sure exactly what that meant for a while, but working with my life coach at the time, she suggested I consider doing what she was doing.
With my counselling background and even much of my pastoral ministry, the idea of coaching wasn’t a real stretch for me, but a relatively new discipline in the helping professions.
I was intrigued and began to explore life coaching and came a cross an individual named Dan Miller. He had written a book, “48 Days to the Work You Love” so I dove in and worked through his material. He also offered a weekend workshop at the time called “Coaching with Excellence” so Kathy and I planned the road trip to Franklin TN.
With about 20 other individuals, Dan began the morning session introducing himself and what we would cover over the next few days. I wasn’t there 5 minutes and with tears running down my face, I knew I was in the right place.
My life was going to change in significant ways, and that weekend was a crucial part of the transition my life would take over the next year.
I have a list of people who have had an impact on my life and Dan is high on it.
Dan, was always positive, looking at life as filled with opportunities and you couldn’t help but be encouraged by his outlook. He always wanted the best for you and everyone around him.
Just before Christmas, 2023 Dan announced that he had terminal cancer, and has since passed away. Even as he announced his illness, he did so with grace and gratitude for a life filled with blessings…and he challenged everyone that knew him to continue his legacy by doing the same.
So, as I grieve the loss of someone who has meant so much, I am also challenged to consider this question…
Who will I inspire?
I think that’s a great question and one that deserves a thoughtful response.
Come to think of it, it’s a question I would challenge you to ask as well…
Who will you inspire?
I believe that much of what we have been given, our talent, our abilities, passions and opportunities are mostly for the sake of others.
In other words, we’re not here for ourselves, but for the benefit of others.
That’s how Dan Miller lived his life.
You don’t have to have a large platform and audience like Dan did, to have an impact. There are people and opportunities all around you, if you take the time to look for them.
So, in honour of Dan, I ask myself, and I ask you…who will we inspire today?
How can I help?
