If You Want to Be Successful in Anything…You Must Do This!

Back in February of this year, I decided it was time to be more intentional about my health. I exercised off and on, but nothing regularly, and my diet was not great. My staple foods were 4 slices of toast every day for lunch, and cereal before bed…not ideal.

I made some significant changes to the way I eat and began with basic dumbbell routines at home that took about 20-30 minutes each day.

Inspired by my friend Kevin Russell, I began walking more as well.

Over time, I increased my weights and the number of sets I was doing.

Recently, I began a new routine that was 5 intense workouts each weekday and last week, the first exercise of the Thursday routine was 4 sets of pull-ups…(AMRP) which means, as many reps as possible.

If you’re not sure what a pull-up is, it begins with your hanging from a bar which is above your head, with your hands placed on the bar about shoulder width apart. Then you pull yourself up with your head moving above the bar, slowly lowering yourself to the starting position, all the time of course keeping your feet off the ground.

I had a pull-up bar so I was without excuse, so I set it up and got ready.

First set…two!

That’s it! Two!!

And I barely made the second one.

Realizing my routine demanded 3 more sets, I rested a bit and went again.

Three! I did three reps!

Now totally exhausted from my combined total of five pull-ups, I wondered if I could go on.

Okay, third set!

Two! I completed two more pull-ups.

I didn’t even attempt the fourth set, in the hopes that I would have the energy to complete the rest of my 60-minute workout.

So my first crack at pull-ups amounted to a grand total of SEVEN!

And you want to know something? I was sore the next day, just from those seven pull-ups!

But here’s the thing.

I started!

I started where I was, and did what I could do.

But I started.

And that’s what you have to do too!

No matter what it is, no matter where you want to improve, grow or change…in order to be successful, you have to START!

Want to get healthier? Start

Want a better marriage? Start

Want a healthier bank account? Start

You have to start somewhere. Exercise, make better food choices, have an intentional conversation with your spouse, plan a date, save regularly. But do something!

I’ve heard it said that the difference between successful people and unsuccessful people is, successful people do things, that the unsuccessful don’t want to do.

Today, I eat eggs and chicken for lunch, I don’t eat cereal and I workout Monday – Friday plus multiple walks with Kathy each week.

But I had to start…somewhere!

If you want to see changes in your life, you have to start too!

Tomorrow’s workout begins with more pull-ups. I don’t know how many I’ll complete (I’ll let you know) but at least I’ve started, and I’ll see where I go from here.

Next week I will discuss how to keep going once you’ve started.
